The Big Sandy and Tug Fork rivers along West Virginia’s border with Kentucky travel through land rich in cultural and economic history. U.S. 52 (called the Tolsia Highway from Kenova to Williamson) parallels much of the river valleys through Wayne County and Mingo County before veering east. The late fiddler Ed Haley played a tune called ‘‘Three Forks of Sandy’’ that had three parts to it, one each for the Tug Fork, the Levisa Fork, and the Big Sandy main Tug Fork originates in McDowell County, while the Levisa and its tributaries rise no more than 20 miles away in southwest two forks flow generally northwestward and parallel to each other.
Louisa, the county seat of Lawrence County, KY, lies at the confluence of Tug and Levisa Forks of the Big Sandy River, on a two-thousand acre tract of land surveyed by George Washington in , the corners of which were well-marked with Washington’s initials.
